Week 3: Older Sister is Visiting
In this third week of being in Korea, it was another week of exploring and a little bit of stress from school…yay! During this third week, it was the final add/drop period for Yonsei classes. I have been literally counting down the days since the second round of registration for this add/drop period. For me, I was waiting to add one last class but was unsuccessful in previous registration periods, so this was my time. Luckily, it all worked out, and I was able to get the class I needed, but I was literally on the registration webpage every day until I got it, hoping and praying that everything would work out. It was truly one of the most stressful class registrations I have ever had.
Outside of that stress from registration, something that was more fun was that my older sister and her best friend came to visit me! Even though I couldn’t join them throughout their trip, I was able to go stay with them for a night at their hotel, which was right in Myeongdong. I went with them to go shopping in Seongsu and Gangnam, where my sister bought me a pair of Gentle Monster sunglasses. They treated me to many meals like delicious Korean BBQ, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), seafood boil, and dakgalbi (spicy marinated chicken). Overall, I had such a fun time with my sister and her friend, and it was also very nice that I didn’t have to pay for anything during the whole time I hung out with them!
Week 4: Mentor Group Meet Up, Yonsei x KU Cheering Event, & Friends Visiting
Now, in this fourth week, it was a very busy yet fun and exciting week. To start, during this time, I got to meet my mentor and people in my mentor group. At Yonsei, there is a club called Yonsei Mentor Club, where they pair off a Yonsei student with a group of international and exchange students. I signed up to get paired off with a mentor, and I finally got to meet them as well as some of the other people in my mentor group. When I went to meet up with my mentor and the other people in my group, we went to get dakgalbi (spicy marinated chicken) and also went to a really cute bar where we got some drinks and played board games.
A couple of days later, there was a Yonsei event, specifically, there was a Yonsei x Korea University (KU) cheering event. The cheering event was so much fun and felt like a true Korean college experience. Basically, during the cheering event, Yonsei and KU would go back and forth performing their schools' cheers and songs for the crowd. Everyone in the crowd was participating in all the cheers and head-banging during every performance. It was insane to see cause everyone was so synchronous, and to see the school pride from two of the top universities in Korea, it was a very fun experience.
Also, during that week, a friend from UH was in Korea for spring break, Logan (Shidler alumnus). I went to meet up with Logan and his friends twice, once during the day, when we went shopping near the Dongmyo and Myeongdong area. The next time meeting up with Logan was at night after I went to the cheering event. I met up with him, his friends, and more people from UH/Shidler. All of us went out in Hongdae and went to a couple of bars and late-night karaoke, which was very fun! It was definitely a long and busy week, but it was such a fun time!
